Here's one of the first films I made, having just been trained as a BBC Video Journalist.

At the time of making this film, I was reading 'Story' by Robert McKee. I remember, this was the first film I'd made where I deliberately decided to tell it as a story, following Robert's advice. For my conflict I plumped for a shortage of long cables. In hindsight, perhaps "Will the public like it?" might have worked better. But no matter, the story was captured.

What I particularly liked about capturing this story was how I turned up to the sound check with my single camera, while our arch-rivals (just kiddling) Central TV also turned up, but with a full prodcution crew. (Must have been a good press release!) You can see their cameras up on the balcony at 38". What I liked was how their big cameras and crew couldn't squeeze into the confined performance space like I could. So they could only get wide shots. Plus, infinitely more significantly, I realised to tell the story properly, I had to return in the evening to film the performance, which I was happy to do. Central didn't return. Their piece never made air. A feather in the cap for this individual way of working!
